December GIFT Follow Up

December GIFT Follow Up Email

Thank you for attending our December GIFT Gatherings: Awaiting the Messiah! We hope that you enjoyed learning about our Catholic Advent traditions and the prophesies of Isaiah. If you were not able to attend the GIFT sessions this month, please click the link here to download the PowerPoint presentation from the event. The PowerPoint includes a link to the YouTube video that Fr. Craig showed for the adult session – Heritage: Civilization and the Jews, Part 2.

At this month’s gatherings, the Catechists led the K-4th grade children through chapter 8 in their books. Please work through the remaining chapters in Unit 3 with them before the 1st week of January, chapters 7 & 9. The website for the text is http://calltofaith.osv.com which is where you can download the home lessons for chapters 7 & 9.

The 5-8th graders discovered that Jesus is a Model of Wisdom for us by reading some parables from Scripture. Mark 10:13-16 Jesus and the Children; Luke 15:8-10 Parable of a Lost Coin; Matthew4:23-24 Jesus Ministers to the Crowds; John 15:1-11 The Vine and the Branches; and John 3:1-10 Nicodemus Visits Jesus. We read the scripture passages, then discussed the following question, “What do you notice about Jesus and his teachings?” The young people said that Jesus cares about everyone and will do anything for us as long as we remain in him. We also talked about the season of Advent, that it lasts four weeks, that it’s a period of waiting leading up to the birth of Jesus and that we should do things to help others and to learn more about Jesus during this period. They shared ideas that they have about that on strips of paper which will be formed into chains and used to decorate the Hall.

What happens when kids feel guilty because they don't go to Mass enough?

This afternoon, I fielded a question from one of our young people - she asked, "What should I do when I feel guilty because I don't go to Mass enough because of all my activities?" Well, the short, albeit, not so easy answer is to pick and choose what activities are truly important and make some decisions about what activities to continue or discontinue.

This question came out of a discussion the group of 5-8th graders were having about the Parable of the Vine and the Branches. We talked about how Jesus wants us to be connected to him, and that if we are, we will bear "good fruit" but sometimes, we need to "prune" away things that keep us from him.

The fact that she recognizes that her activities are keeping her from Church and that she is feeling a bit guilty about it is good, but hard to face when you're in middle school and facing all the pressures of school and home life. What I wished I would have thought of in the minute was to tell her to have a conversation about her feelings with her family and see if they can come up with any solutions. What I did tell her in the moment, was to talk to Fr. Craig or another priest about it (perhaps in Confession) to see if they could brainstorm an answer together. What I suspect would happen is that the priest would point her back to her family to have that conversation.

What struck me about this discussion was that it was initiated by a young person! So good for her!

November GIFT Follow-Up

November GIFT Follow Up Email

Thank you for attending our November GIFT Gatherings! We hope that you enjoyed learning about different Catholic prayer traditions like Intercessory Prayer, Meditation, Praying with Scripture (the Ignatian way) and Taize Prayer Around the Cross. If you were not able to attend the GIFT sessions this month, please click the link here to download the PowerPoint presentation from the event.

At this month’s gatherings, the Catechists led the K-4th grade children through chapter 5 in their books. Please work through the remaining chapters in Unit 2 with them before the 1st week of December, chapters 4 & 6. The website for the text is http://calltofaith.osv.com which is where you can download the home lessons for chapters 4 & 6.

The 5-8th graders explored the prayer styles with the adults and high school students during these sessions.

There are a couple of FREE apps that I would like to share with you to enhance your prayer lives…1) Loyola Press (Jesuit) has a 3-Minute Retreat app that features a short scripture verse, question to reflect upon and soft music in the background. It’s timed so if all you have is 3 minutes – that works!  2)  the World Community for Christian Meditation has an app which includes timers for your meditation (like Jeff Erickson mentioned on Weds night) but it also features the weekly readings.

October GIFT Follow Up - Solidarity for all God's People

October GIFT Follow Up Email

Thank you for attending our October GIFT Gatherings! We hope that you enjoyed learning about the Catholic Social Teaching principal of Solidarity. If you were not able to attend the GIFT sessions this month, please click the link here to download the PowerPoint presentation from the event.

At this month’s gatherings, the Catechists led the K-4th grade children through chapter 2 in their books. Please work through the remaining chapters in Unit 1 with them before the 1st week of November, chapter 1 & 3. The website for the text is http://calltofaith.osv.com which is where you can download the home lessons for chapters 1 & 3.

The 5-8th graders explored the expectations that friends, family and God have for them and that we can turn to prayer to cope with life’s pressures when we are overwhelmed. They learned that sometimes we need to reevaluate our priorities and place more value on the things that are truly important to us. Secondly - we also learned that God created us differently than the other things he created because humans have a SOUL (which helps us reflect God to the world) and FREE WILL (which gives us the ability to make our own choices – with limitations). Thirdly – we learned that because God created us in his image and likeness, we all have inherent dignity and value regardless of our racial, ethnic, ideological or economic differences which is the basis for our Catholic Social Teaching of SOLIDARITY.

At the Orientation gatherings, the catechists shared through the mini-workshops we offered. At the Scripture workshop, Stephanie and Debbie shared the “Scripture Jar” activity. The verses are attached, print them, cut them out and create your own family Scripture Jar!

Here is some info I found about the FTC - I also have a link to share with families on places to purchase FTC Halloween Treats to pass out...

Also for Father Craig - I found some info about See's that looks like they too also use Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance Chocolate. :)

Ms. Sabrina takes care of God

This made my day! A child at the St. StMatthias Preschool just said to me, "There's Ms. Sabrina, she takes care of God!" How cute is that? Theologically incorrect, as God takes care of me, but cute nonetheless!— feeling happy.

Searching for Faith Filled Families!

As the summer is about the close in just a few shorts weeks, backpacks are being filled with school supplies, new clothes are being purchased and the transition to a new grade, school, or even state or living situation is being reflected upon, we at St. Matthias are preparing for another exciting year of faith formation.

We have been busy planning our GIFT sessions - our monthly, intergenerational gatherings, where all members of the parish community, young and old, come together to learn about a topic. Then, continue exploring that topic throughout the month with their families and friends.

We'll again, we exploring some interesting topics - what the Church teaches about Marriage, and why, how the prophets, especially Isaiah, foretold of the coming of the Messiah, how we are called to live in peace! We are working on inviting guest speakers to the sessions so that our learning can be expanded.

We'll also have a preschool-age breakout session during GIFT this year - so that families with young children can attend the gatherings together; moms and dads won't have to take turns staying home with preschool aged children.

Watch your mail boxes - registration materials are on their way!

Pope Francis captures the imagination!

photo.JPGLooks like the election of our first Pope, Francis I has captured the imagination of the youth! Using his creativity, Sebastian made his very own pope costume. What a great idea for Halloween - an awesome costume, but an evangelization tool as well! Imagine going to school for the Halloween party and parade dressed as Pope Francis - would that be a violation of the separation of Church and State or a moment of opportunity to evangelization about why this pope is so remarkable? Thanks to Amy for sending this to me.

Habemus papem!

How exciting -  Francis I our new pope. All sorts of firsts. First pope from Latin America, first non-European since the 8th century, and first Jesuit pope in hundreds of years. He's humble, and a man of the people. Well see what sort of leader he will be.

The Papal Transition

Hi Families:

You have probably heard by now, that Pope Benedict XVI has resigned as our Pope.
This is a virtually unprecended, but very couregeous decision that he has made. It was just almost 8 years ago when he was elected, and he has served the Church faithfully.

I stumbled across this article this morning in America Magazine about the papal transition, and thought that you might find it helpful as you are discussing this transition in your families, so wanted to share it.
