Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy,
you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

Halloween: A Holiday from Hell?
Anyone who has questions about the origins or purpose of this holiday - which I love, by the way - should take a look at this article.
I'm currently a Medieval Christianity class at CSUEB and was interested to find out that it was Pope Gregory IV (Gregory IV argued with Louis the Pious of the Carolingian's about his succession from St. Peter. ) who moved the feast day of All Hallows from May 13th to November 1st - after the harvest, so that Rome would be properly provisioned for the pilgrims who would flock to the city.

Here's a video by Fr. James Martin which also explains the connection between All Hallows Eve, All Saints and Halloween.

The Warriors Win!!!
What a wonderful example of using an every day moment (OK, maybe not every day - The Warriors haven't won a championship in 40 years - but you know what I mean) as a teachable moment filled with God. For Andre Iguedala who was named MVP to praise God on national television and then share how the team starts each day at Chapel - then seeing your kids nod in agreement.
Katherine shared the following story with me about this family moment - which I wanted to share with you all (with her permission, of course).
Just had to share this story with you all.
So we just finished watching the Warriors become the NBA Champions (you may have too), then right afterwards we watched the awards ceremony. Andre Iguedala was the MVP and was interviewed first. When asked "what do you have to say"...his reply was, "God is Great...God is Great!". Then kinda left it hanging until it sunk in then went on. Later he was interviewed briefly again and said the team started everyday at Chapel together which made them stronger as a team.
I loved it that we were watching as a family and could see the kids all nodding in agreement. A brand new hero was saying this on TV in front of the whole world. It was an amazing God moment and wanted to share with you all.
Thinking of you all and keeping you all in my prayers for a relaxing, fun filled Summer!
Lots of love,
Katherine

First Communion Preparation
We recently celebrated first Communion for our group of second/third graders in the parish. As part of the preparation for the group, we host a retreat day to talk with the parents and their children about the sacrament. One of the activities we conduct is a Church Tour.
We begin by asking the children and parents to look around the Church. They are instructed to draw or write down a list of all the "things that they think are important". They are free to move around the space, getting up close and personal with the objects they see.
After a few minutes, we re-convene with the group. I ask one person at a time to name/show one thing they drew. Inevitably, the altar, pews, stained glass windows and ambo are named; although not always with the correct terms. We then tour the space and look at each object and talk about what it's purpose is. The tabernacle, ambo, and sanctuary lamp are the most "unknown". I then ask a follow-up question, which of the objects named are important/necessary for Mass? We discuss how the piano and stained glass windows are not necessary, but serve to beautify the space with color and music.
Those things that are necessary, essential even, the altar, ambo, seating (for the people, but not necessarily pews), etc. are things that one will find in ALL Catholic Churches in one form or another.
Shortly after the retreat day, a family went on vacation to Taiwan. Here is a note I received from them...Beautiful - FAITH IN ACTION!

In Taiwan we went quaint little parish in the mountains and Hans saw that it had all the same important things as St. Matthias. We took a picture there (he looks this dour in every picture.) Later we went to a beautiful cathedral in Taipei for Easter Mass and Hans was able to point out all the same stuff. It was a nice chance to reinforce what we learned the week before at first communion class.
I attached another picture so you could see the tea farming area we were in at 6 to 7 thousand feet elevation. On a clear day you can look down and see the ocean. It's a small island.

Celebrating Easter for Busy Parents
Hi Families;
We are about the enter the most sacred time in our Church calendar - Holy Week (which begins this weekend with Palm Sunday)! This time is even more important than Christmas because this is when we celebrate the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us, His death in the Crucifixion and new life in the Resurrection. Without Jesus having freely chosen to sacrifice his life for us, we would not have the faith that we hold so dear. He also gave us His body and blood in the Eucharist so that we can grow closer to him and become more like him in the world.
These things are often difficult to explain to young children. However, it's important that they understand these things early so that they can fully appreciate the faith that you are passing down to them.
Attached is a Handout that seeks to help you answer some of their difficult questions and which gives practical tips on how to make the Easter season (Easter doesn't end the evening of Easter Sunday, but continues through til Pentecost) more meaningful for you and your children.
Enjoy and celebrate. I hope to see you at Seder Supper (Holy Thursday), Good Friday services, and Easter Sunday!
Sabrina
